PORTLAND, Maine — Four Coast Guard cutters broke ice on the Kennebec River in Maine, March 12, 2011, to prevent ice jams from forming and causing coastal flooding.
Coast Guard cutters Tackle, Bridle, Shackle and Thunder Bay conducted ice-breaking operations from Merrymeeting Bay, Maine, to the Richmond Bridge in Richmond, Maine.
Ice breaking is scheduled to continue March 14, 2011.
