Coast Guard air crew medically evacuates ill fisherman

BOSTON — A U.S. Coast Guard rescue crew medically evacuated an ill crewman from the 84-ft fishing vessel Polaris, 12-miles east of Nantucket, Thursday.

Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstanders received a report from the captain of vessel at approximately 5:30 p.m., stating that a 37-year old male on board was suffering from severe stomach pains.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod launched immediately to aid the ill man.

The man was given first aid assistance and was transported to Hyannis Airport at 7:15 p.m., where emergency medical services were waiting to take him to Cape Cod Hospital.

"The coordination with Hyannis Airport and Cape Cod Hospital was seamless," said Lt. j.g. Jared Carbajal, the Public Affairs Officer at Air Station Cape Cod. "It resulted in immediate medical transportation and treatment once the helicopter arrived at the airport."
