Coast Guard locates missing boater

BOSTON - The Coast Guard located a Boston man who went missing about noon today after a boat he was in turned over near Mattapoisett Harbor, Mass.

Safe is Fitzroy Libert, who was one of four people rescued when their 18-foot pleasure craft capsized in rough seas.  Two people aboard a 22-foot Bayliner rescued Libert and returned him safely to shore.

A second pleasure boat had previously rescued the other three people and returned them safely to the Mattapoisett Harbor Master at 12:21 p.m.

Upon arriving at his house, Libert called the Coast Guard at 4:40 p.m. to report he was safe and sound.

No one was seriously injured in the incident.

Four rescue vessels scoured the area, after the Coast Guard could not locate Libert and the Bayliner to confirm their safe return to shore.  The search vessels included a Station Woods Hole, Mass. 41-foot utility boat, a Massachusetts Environmental Police Boat, a Mattapoisett Police Boat, and a Mattapoiset Harbor Master Boat.

"Mr. Libert is safe and sound," said John Harland from the Sector Southeastern New England Operations Center in Woods Hole, Mass.  "We can't stress enough with the public how important it is to call their nearest Coast Guard unit right away if they make it to shore safely after getting separated from their boat."
