Coast Guard searches for missing boat

BOSTON - The Coast Guard is searching for an overdue 26-foot boat in Block Island Sound this evening.

The Aflora, a white, 26-foot boat with blue trim, was believed to be transiting from Block Island to Newport.

Stephen Whelan is the only person aboard the boat and his wife called the Coast Guard after becoming concerned after he did not arrive in port when expected.

An Air Station Cape Cod HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter and a Station Castle Hill 41-foot utility boat are scouring the area looking for Whelan and his boat.

Anyone with information about Mr. Whelan or the boat is asked to call Sector Southeastern New England at 1-508-457-3211.

"We became concerned after extensive checks into whether Mr. Whelan may have arrived at another port without our knowledge," said Petty Officer Jesse Jordan with Sector Southeastern New England.  "We are issuing radio calls to mariners in the area to be on the lookout for him."
