| Coast Guard rescues two people after vessel capsizes |
|
BOSTON - The Coast Guard rescued two people from the water Saturday night after their vessel capsized at the mouth of the Merrimack River in Massachusetts. A Good Samaritan on the recreational vessel Fanatic notified Coast Guard Station Merrimack River, Mass., at 8:42 p.m., on VHF/FM channel 16 that a 20-foot recreational vessel was taking on water. The station immediately launched a 47-foot motor lifeboat and a 25-foot response boat. The response boat crew arrived on scene seven minutes after the inital radio call and rescued the two people, who were clinging to the hull of the pleasure craft. The people were then transferred to the harbormaster who transported them safely to the Salisbury Marina, in Salisbury, Mass. No pollution was observed and a commercial salvage company towed the boat to the Salisbury Marina. “Although the air temperature was warmer today than it has been the rest of the week, the water temperature is still dangerously cold,” said Lt. j.g. Jeff Young, command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Boston. “We're glad Station Merrimack River's boat crew was able to get them out of the water and to shore safely and quickly." |
