Media invited as Coast Guard names new Ancient Keeper

BOSTON -Media are invited to attend as the Coast Guard sees off its Ancient Keeper during a change of watch ceremony Wednesday at 11 a.m., at Coast Guard Station Castle Hill in Newport, R.I.

 

WHAT: Coast Guard change of watch, station change of command, and retirement ceremony

 

WHO: Chief Warrant Officer Kevin J. Galvin and Chief Warrant Officer Thomas J. Guthlein

 

WHEN: Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 11 a.m.

 

WHERE: Coast Guard Station Castle Hill, 75 Ridge Road, Newport, R.I. 02840

 

The Ancient Keeper title recognizes longevity within the boat forces and is in honor of Coast Guard legend Captain Joshua James, who is credited with saving more than 600 people during his lifetime.

Chief Warrant Officer Kevin J. Galvin, the commanding officer of Station Castle Hill and current Ancient Keeper, is retiring after a distinguished Coast Guard career.

 

Galvin, a Salem, N.H., native, enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserves in 1976. He entered active duty service one year later and has been a commanding officer six times in his 33 years of service.

 

During the ceremony, Chief Warrant Officer Thomas J. Guthlein will be named as the new Ancient Keeper and commanding officer of Station Castle Hill.

 

Guthlein started his Coast Guard career in the reserves in 1978 and has been on active duty since 1982. He received a commission as chief warrant officer in June 1998.

 

Guthlein is currently the commanding officer at Station Point Allerton in Hull, Mass.
