| Crews respond to boat fire in N.H |

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine- A Coast Guard boat crew helped partner agencies extinguish a fire on a recreational boat about 11 miles inland on the Cocheco River near Strafford, N.H., around 2:15 p.m., Sunday. Coast Guard Station Portsmouth Harbor was notified by the Dover Police Department about a fire on board a pleasure craft and launched a 25-foot boat crew to the scene. There were four people aboard the boat, two adults and two children from Lee, N.H., who were plucked from the burning vessel by a nearby good Samaritin. The Coast Guard boat crew began fire-fighting efforts by spraying water on the fire until the Portsmouth Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the blaze. The children sustained some injuries and were transferred to an area hospital. The New Hampshire Marine Patrol will conduct an investigation to try to determine the cause of the fire. The boat burned to the vessel’s water line and is currently secured to the shore. “Rescue crews urgently extinguished the blaze, recognizing the boats’ proximity to land and the potential for the fire to spread if the burning boat drifted into the shoreline,” said Senior Chief Joe Tallent, command center supervisor at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “The cooperative effort of all the agencies involved helped to prevent further damage at the scene.”
