Coast Guard launches massive search for missing Nantucket man

Four Coast Guard boats, two cutters and a helicopter are searching the waters between Hyannis, Mass., and Nantucket for a 36-year-old man who was last seen at the helm of his boat around 9:15 p.m., Wednesday.

John Hemingway’s wife and two children, who had gone below deck around 9:15 Wednesday night to go to sleep, discovered he was missing at about 3 a.m., Thursday when they awoke to the boat running aground on the north side of Nantucket.

A 47-foot motor lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Brant Point on Nantucket, two 41-foot utility boats from Station Woods Hole, Mass., a 42-foot near-shore lifeboat from Station Chatham, Mass., the 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Sanibel from Woods Hole, and a Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., are searching for Hemingway. Additionally, the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead from Woods Hole is en route to assist.

Hemingway was not wearing a lifejacket when he was last seen Wednesday night.
