PORTLAND, Maine — The Coast Guard is seeking the public's assistance to find the source of a possible hoax Mayday caller in the vicinity of the Penobscot Bay area of Maine, Wed., April 21, 2010.
The Coast Guard Sector Northern New England command center received a Mayday call on VHF-FM radio channel 16 at 1:18 p.m., of an adult male stating, "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. Help me, I'm on dry land."
Hoax distress calls placed to the Coast Guard are classified as a felony punishable by up to six years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
